"Judaica Roadshow" Our first meeting this year is meant to put a capital J on the Judaic aspects of the Guild.  Please bring something Judaic from home and tell us a little about its history.  It doesn’t have to be textile related nor particularly antique.  Our aim is to look at these objects and find in them inspiration for future work.  Everyone will go home with a blank textile slate. Holocaust Education Week "Through the Eye of the Needle", a film about Esther Krinitz's story of survival told through a series of 36 collage and embroidery panels.  After the film there will be a panel discussion with the director, Nina Shapiro-Perl and Baycrest's Michael Gordon Program co-sponsored by the Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Textiles and Baycrest Geriatric Centre Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto Congregation, 613 Clark Ave W  Thornhill, ON November 20, 2013 "Text Messaging" A hands-on evening of putting text messages into our work December 18, 2013 "Movie Night" The exquisite quilts of the Israeli Quilters Association January 15, 2014 "Silk Stones" with Rochelle Rubinstein "I use fabric, thread, inks and dyes in ways that delight and deceive the eye; for example, woodblock-printed and hand-sewn silk that imitates stone walls.  Using multiple techniques - block printing, drawing with thread, painting, overlapping - I often re-work large pieces over long periods,  I blend cultural legends and biblical narratives with my own personal stories and imagery to explore unorthodox combinations and juxtapositions of traditional materials and techniques. February 19, 2014 "Felted Bracelets" Melanie Siegel will lead a hands-on workshop to make felted bracelets. March 19, 2014 "Torah Stitch by Stitch - 9 Months later" with Temma Gentles Temma will present an illustrated talk about Torah Stitch By Stitch, nine months after its launch.  She will share the origins of the project, its relationship to textile and scribal traditions, explore some of the halachic issues raised, and show a few of the magnificent panels already completed. April 23, 2014 Please note that this is the fourth Wednesday of the month. "Seamless:  Embedding Judaic Texts in Judaic Textiles” with Judith Leitner Judith Leitner is the Director of Arts, a co-founder and Visual Arts teacher at the Toronto Heschel School.  She values the Arts as essential teaching tools and necessary for the development of artful thinking.  She will lead us in creating a fabric arts sketch of the word 'שמע' May 21, 2014 Counting the Omer and Inspiration with Laya Crust There is an often overlooked period of time between Passover and Shavuot called "The Omer". This is a period of seven weeks that has a rich artistic and spiritual history. In this presentation Laya Crust will discuss the history of Counting the Omer -the practical as well as the spiritual aspects. She will show images of unique and quaint Omer counters that have been used throughout Jewish history in communities from different parts of the world. There is a resurgence of this tradition which we'll explore. We will finish off our Omer Odyssey by designing our own Omer projects.
